The Basque association of electronics and information technology businesses, GAIA, is the point of reference for anyone wanting to know how the Basque electronics and telecommunications industry is faring. In 2007, GAIA's 206 member firms registered joint turnover of 3,032 million euros, 22% up on the previous year's figure. Most of these firms (36.2%) work in computer-related sub-sectors and professional electronics (32.9%), with telecommunications (18.1%) and components (12.8%) bringing up the rear.
The national market represents more than 60% of turnover for the companies grouped together in Gaia. According to data released by GAIA, its member businesses account for a 13% share of Spanish electronics and telecommunications production, a figure that increases to 41.5% in the case of professional electronics. These figures reflect the substantial concentration of Basque-based industry in this activity, while giving an idea of its potential in industrial process automation initiatives.
Exports stand at 750 million Euros. The Basque economy puts direct employment in the industry at 11.732 people in 2007. Fifty-four per cent of the workforce works in data transmission, 38.6% in professional electronics and 7.1% in components.
As for the investments section, companies in the sector set 115 million euros for R&D in 2007.
