The Cluster Association of Paper of the Basque Country closed 2007 with a turnover of 625 million Euros, which represents 4.7% more with respect to the previous year. By sectors, the manufacturers of paper and paste closed the financial year with sales of 577 million, 4.6% less with respect to 2006.
These companies obtained exports of 254 million Euros, 41% of their turnover in 2007. The manufacturers of capital assets exported 55% of their turnover. The target countries where the EU and the rest of Europe with 65%; Central and South America with 32%; the Far East and the Asia with 2.3% and others with 0.7%. The manufacturers of pulp and paper exported 36% of their production mainly in Europe (82%).
The cluster, promoted by the Basque Government in 1988, is made up of 16 companies related to cellulose and paper, between manufacturers of capital assets, integrated pulp, pulp and paper, as well as the Paper Mill School of Tolosa and they represent 34% of Spain's total production of printing and writing paper.
These associated companies' production of pulp and paper has grown around 30% in five years, with a current production of 1,040,563 tons, which represents 11.83% of the pulp and paper produced in Spain.
The companies that make up the Cluster undertook investments of million Euros in 2007 mainly to improve manufacturing processes and the environment (54%). The paper industry is increasing its use of technology; it is in constant evolution. In the Basque Country, this activity represents 6.5% of the Basque Industrial GDP and 2% of the Basque Country's GDP. The companies within the cluster employ 7,500 people directly and indirectly. The companies employ 2,059 people.
The Cluster complies with all the European requirements with regards to the environment. A large number of the companies that belong to the cluster have ISO-9000 and 9001 quality certificates, and another great number have the Environmental 14,000. Its goal at this moment is to reach total quality.
